Big Spring High School’s Phillip Lopez signed his letter of intent to play competitive golf for the University Of The Southwest, a private Christian university in Hobbs, New Mexico on Tuesday morning.

When asked how he felt to be able to have his signing while surrounded by friends and family, Lopez said he was speechless, "I'm glad that everyone got to come. I'm glad I got to sign. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm just glad that I'm doing it."

Lopez says he’s been playing golf competitively since the 7th grade, but it was in 6th grade that he was taught how to play by his family.

"I just want to thank my uncle Matt, my uncle JR, and [grandfather] Pano. Their the ones who taught me golf. Without them, I wouldn't be here right now," said Lopez.

While at the University of Southwest Lopez plans to study Finance and Business and hopes to be a financial advisor.
