** 8th grade A TEAM WON 54-0 over SWEETWATER. **

Thursday the 8th grade Steers hosted the Sweetwater Mustangs, in a game highlighted by the rain and cold. The Steers goal was to be the more physical team and they showed that throughout the contest.

The Steers first play from scrimmage was a 15 yd. Scramble by Eli Cobos for a touchdown. On the ensuing defensive series, the Steers held the Mustangs to -6 yards via several tackles for losses coming from David Rios. When the Steers got the ball back, Philip Martinez ran behind a wall created by Rahleigh Eddington and Ian Galan along with slot receiver Derick Walleck for another Big Spring Score. For the 2 point attempt, Cobos found Connor Andrea to complete the try. The Steers continued to score: two more Philip Martinez runs, a touchdown pass from Cobos to Sergio Ybarra, a QB keeper off of zone read by (2nd string QB) Ricky Escovedo working with Korbin Olsen, 2 safeties recorded by the defense, and a kick return off of one of those safeties by Chris Salazar. Offensively it was a good night.

Defensively the Steers were even more dominant recording 2 safeties during the game. Starting with Nose Nick Garcia, the Steers constantly disrupted the backfield of the Sweetwater Offense. Rios and Andrea were able to make quick adjustments in their alignment that helped the defense stay sound throughout the night. Ybarra helped out on D as well with a late game interception.

Special Teams kept Sweetwater on their back quarter of the field via great kickoffs from Cobos and even better coverage by the kickoff unit.

Big Hitter(s) of the week: David Rios(D)/Ricky Escovedo(ST)

** 7th grade B TEAM WON 50 to 0 over SWEETWATER **

The steers broke the wild mustangs last night with great defense and an unstoppable offense. Defensively the steers made a ton great team tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The mighty steers took advantage of wet conditions and forced several fumbles in which 3 of them were recovered and returned by BAILEY SIMPSON who also had 6 tackles for a loss. MICHAEL MUNOZ and JEREMIAH YBARRA both made several crucial tackles to help keep the mustangs out of both the red zone and the end zone. JOSEPH MURRILLO and ANTHONY GONZALEZ solidified the strength of the defensive line with great effort up front.

Offensively the steers gave the fans a reason to buy popcorn as they put on a show reaching the end zone 6times and converting all of their 2point conversions. The O-line made that possible by creating massive lanes for the backs. IAN CORTEZ and QBEN LEWIS both had two touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing a piece. Quarterback KENDERRICK JACKSON had two touchdowns as well on the zone read which helped keep the mustangs honest on defense. ANTRON DEMPS pitched in on offense with his first touchdown of the season by way of rushing.

** 7th grade A TEAM WON 30 to 6 over SWEETWATER **

Thursday night was another cold and wet game for the mighty steers as they fought to tame a different group of wild mustangs but here at home. Defensively it took some grit for the steers to get it figured out as they provided the offense with the ball by creating multiple stops and turnovers.

ANGEL RIVERA was solid with his linebacker play by keep outside contained and making several big hits. KYLE GAY changed the name of his position from linebacker to bell ringer as he came up with 3 obliterating hits that crippled the mustangs he also had 5 tackles. After a rough first quarter the defensive shut things down up front by pass rushing and tackles behind the line of scrimmage. ABEL CASARES had 3 tackles, KEYSHAUN WOODRUFF had 5 tackles, ANGEL RIVERA had 6 tackles which sparked dominating play from the DLINE AND LINEBACKERS. The secondary joined the party with 3 pics. JAYDEN DRAKE HAD 2 PICS(INTERCEPTIONS) AND EZEKIEL CARREON had 1 late in the 4th quarter to stick the dagger in.

The OLINE again dominated up front as they were led by Center JEREMIAH PRESAS and created Mack truck sized running lanes for the running game and gave the Quarter back an eternity to throw the ball in the passing game. GAVIN PADRON connected with AUSTEN PERKINS for 1 touchdown and a 2point conversion. It was another running back by committee type of game as ABRAM JACKSON (AJ) HAD OVER 100 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns, TYREE BRAWLEY rushed for over 150 yards yet again and scored 1 touchdown, ANGEL RIVERA rushed for 50 yards total, and ABEL CASARES scored a 2-point conversion.

More importantly the steers showed great sportsmanship, team leadership, and love as they played for and with one another.

The boys did a great job of being respectful and encouraging on the sidelines. They picked each other up and gave each other confidence in themselves. It was a great team effort by both teams.

The steers face off against Andrews again here at home next Thursday.
