Bulldogettes cage Lady Cubs - Coahoma 11, Brownfield 2 @ Brownfield
The Bulldogettes had a big 6th inning to cinch their fifth straight win of non-district play Saturday, March 2nd, in Brownfield, Texas. Coahoma won 11-2 against the Brownfield Lady Cubs.
Early in the game, much of the action stayed at the pitcher’s mound as Coahoma’s MaKynlee Overton and Brownfield’s Savannah Mendez kept hits to a premium.
The game remained scoreless until Coahoma’s Jaydan Mann popped a ground ball to center field for a single and brought home Kamri Kemper from third. One play earlier, Kemper tripled on a fly ball to right field.
Mann led the Bulldogettes in hits going 3 for 4 at the plate but Kemper wasn’t far behind going 2 for 5. The ‘Dogettes scored two more runs in the top of the 4th but broke open the game with a 5-run streak in the 6th inning.
Cassie Grant started off the Bulldogettes offense in the sixth by belting a fly ball to center field for a double. The Coahoma junior was heading across home plate on the next play after Ashley Romero powered a fly ball to right field for a triple. The freshman was not on base for long as she scored on an error by the Lady Cub center fielder.
Next up, Lexi Montelongo hit a single on a line drive to center field then took advantage of an error by the Lady Cub right fielder to advance to third. At the next bat, Kemper singled on a line drive bringing Montelongo across home plate. An error placed Kemper in scoring position at third then Mann stepped up to the plate. She hit a fly ball and Kemper ran home for the score. MaKynlee Overton singled on a fly ball to left field to bring Mann home from second for the last score of the inning.
The Bulldogettes got two more runs in top of the 7th inning then quickly dispatch the Lady Cubs batting line up in the bottom of the inning with a strikeout, a fly out, and a strikeout to walk away with the 11-2 victory.
MaKynlee Overton got the credit for win. She threw 88 pitches, allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, had 1 walk and struck out 12 batters. She faced 25 batters over 7 innings and got 64 strikes. Grant had one double. Romero and Kemper both had a triple.The Bulldogettes will be back in action Tuesday at Andrews. The JV team begins at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity girls’ game at 6:30 p.m.
Bulldogs stifle Yellow Jackets - Coahoma 8, Kermit 1 @ Monahans
The strong arm of pitcher Landon Franklin paved the way for another Bulldog win Saturday, March 2nd, in Monahans. The ‘Dogs won 8-1 against the Kermit Yellow Jackets in their last game of the 2018 Sandhills Classic tournament.
Franklin was on fire at the mound where he pitched a no-hitter.The Yellow Jackets only score came from an error in the bottom of the third.
The Bulldogs scattered their runs over three innings - 1 in the 1st inning, 4 in the 2nd, and 3 in the 4th.
Bracy Bacon jump started the ‘Dogs early in the game belting a line drive to left field for a double in the first inning. Two plays later, the senior was back in the dugout after he was brought home by Franklin who hit a ground ball and reached first because of an error by the Yellow Jacket shortstop.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-0 in the 4th inning. With two out and the bases loaded, Gaige Hill hit a hard ground ball to left field for a single. Chris Castillo and Zach Holmes scored on the play. At the next bat, Franklin brought home Bacon after powering a line drive to center field for a double. The last run of the inning came from Trey Brumley who came across home plate after Braden Pearson hit a ground ball and reached base on an error by the Yellow Jacket shortstop.
The Bulldogs racked up three more runs in two plays during the top of the 4th. With only one out, Pearson smashed the ball on a line drive to right field for a double to bring in Franklin for the score. Then Jonathon Schneider smacked a double on a hard ground ball to left field bringing Franklin home for Bulldogs.
Franklin got the credit for the win. He faced 22 batters, threw 94 pitches, allowed no hits, surrendered 1 run and struck out 14. Franklin got 60 strikes over six innings. Bacon and Franklin led the Bulldogs in hits. Bacon went 2 for 3 at the plate while Franklin went 2 for 4. Franklin, Pearson, Bacon, and J. Schneider hit a double each during the match.
The Bulldogs went 1-3 in the tournament. They will be back in action Tuesday when they take on the San Angelo TLCA at the Bell St. Complex in San Angelo. Varsity begins at 4:30 p.m. followed by the JV game at 6:30 p.m.
