On Friday, the Forsan Lady Buffs ended their regular season with a record of 22-5, and the team was 11-1 in District 7 AA, resulting in the Lady Buffs becoming the season’s District Champs.

It was also Head Girls’ Basketball Coach Lloyd Vedder’s 500th win that he’s had in his 28 years of coaching.

Coach Vedder is a graduate of Cleburne High School, and a college graduate of Tarleton University. He said he was hired for his first head coaching position straight out of college in Buckholts, TX. Vedder said he switched over from coaching Boys Basketball to Girls’ Basketball so that he’d have the opportunity to coach his daughter in high school. After his daughter graduated, he considered coaching boys again, but ultimately decided that he enjoys coaching girls’ teams.

Vedder is in his second year of coaching the Lady Buffs at Forsan and says that he pushes his team to do their best. His coaching philosophy is “If you can handle me pushing [you] and getting after [you], come game time you’re gonna be able to handle most of what you see [and] comes at [you].”

Even though his 500th win is quite impressive, Coach Vedder is more concerned about leading his team to the regional tournament and overcoming challenges. Vedder told KBest News that the biggest challenge the team has had was not being named in the top 4 2017-2018 Girls District Picks for their district when the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches released that information at the beginning of the season.

“I think that was a big push for us because we knew that we belonged, but it was almost like a slap in the face; disrespected [because] we were not picked…We lost that first district ball game, but we refocused and right now we’ve won 13 straight, including 2 games that were in a tournament at Christmas.”

“[I’m] looking forward to [see] how far we go, but knowing that these kids come to play, come to practice each day with a focused mindset is always nice.”

The next game for the Varsity Lady Buffs will be this evening against Alpine in Monahans at 5 PM. You can also listen to a live interview with Coach Vedder and some of the Lady Buffs tomorrow morning on the KBest Country Chaos Morning Show on 95.7 FM and The Mighty 1490 AM at 7:30 AM.
