During last night’s meeting of the Big Spring ISD Board of Trustees, the district recognized their teachers of the year. Tabitha Barbee received Secondary Teacher of the Year. Barbee teaches Texas History and coaches volleyball and track at Big Spring Jr. High. Georgia Molina was recognized as the elementary teacher of the year. She is a 4th-grade math teacher at Goliad Elementary.
BSISD Board members also approved an expenditure of over $150,000 for the purpose of replacing turf at Memorial Stadium. According to BSISD Superintendent Jay McWilliams, the turf must be replaced either this year or next year because it had not passed the Gmax test - which is the turf’s ability to absorb force. This is important because it shows what happens to a head when it hits the turf. If not replaced, it had the potential to open the district up to legal liability if students continued to play on it. $800,000 has been budgeted for the turf replacement and it is estimated to cost $791,000. McWilliams advised that it would be completed by Hellas by the end of the summer.
