Big Spring Councilmembers approved an ordinance to name a newly constructed pavilion at ABC Park as “PJ ‘The DJ’ Pavilion”, in honor of the late PJ Dominguez - a beloved community member who served with LULAC and the Northside Movement before his death in 2018. This was approved with a majority vote of 6-1 with McDonald, District 4, voting against.

The amending ordinance proposed by Big Spring Mayor Shannon Thomason to name a future park planned near the Benton Bridge and NE 1st St. as "Oscar Garcia Park" - in honor of the late Oscar Garcia - a former city council member, decorated Vietnam Veteran, the first Hispanic Republican candidate to be elected as Howard County Commissioner for Precinct 1, and sitting County Commissioner at the time of his death in 2020 - failed due to a lack of a majority vote.

The recorded vote for that item was 3 for, 3 against, and 1 abstention. Those voting for the ordinance were Mayor Thomason; Councilwoman McDonald, District 4; and Councilman Maury Smith, District 6. Councilmembers voting against were Ornelas, District 1; Yanez, District 2; and Cody Hughes, District 3. Troy Tompkins, District 5 Councilman, abstained from the vote.
