A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will increase the potential for fire growth today in the Howard County area and much of West Texas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from this afternoon through this evening for much of West Texas for very dry and windy conditions and extreme fire danger.

The affected area includes the following counties: Gaines, Dawson, Borden, Andrews, Martin, Howard, Ector, and Midland, among others.

Wind speed is expected to be 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph. Relative humidity is as low as 3 to 5 percent. The Red Flag Threat Index will range from 6 to 8 or critical to extreme.

The public is urged to avoid the use of open flames or any activities that may generate sparks.
