The Coahoma High School academic team had an excellent day at the UIL district meet held in Stanton recently advancing seven students and two teams on to regional competition and placing second overall in District 5-3A.
“We had a great day at the competition,” said Melissa Watson, UIL academic sponsor. “The students have worked very hard to be competitive, and I am proud of them.”
Grayson Glidewell has spent years honing his speech and debate skills, and it paid off. The CHS senior captured first place in the Current Issues and Informative Speaking events. Fellow teammate Maggie Guo will also advance on to region in two events. She finished first in Copy Editing and third in Spelling and Vocabulary.
Others moving on individually from the Coahoma team were Ruby Sosa, first place in News Writing; Amy Guo, first place in Spelling and Vocabulary; Faith Raspe, second place in prose; Netalie Roberts, second place in Feature Writing; and Oliva Davidson, second place in Editorial Writing. Two CHS teams advanced, which were Current Issues and Spelling and Vocabulary.
In all, CHS placed second with 342 points just behind Sonora High School. The students brought home five golds, three silvers, and a bronze at the competition. CHS also had two first place teams and two second place teams.
“My team can not wait until next year to compete with the goal of winning the district championship,” Watson said.
Adding to the CHS teams overall competition points were the successful run by Glidewell and his partner Aubrey Green at CX Debate competition. Held earlier in the year, the two CHS seniors won the District 5-3A CX Debate championship.
During the state CX contest held March 15-16, Glidewell and Green just missed making the 3A finals after losing their last debate. However, several judges did take notice of Glidewell’s performance. They ranked him in six place individually in the Class 3A speaker awards.
The regional academic contest will be held virtually on Friday, April 16-17.
