During Monday’s meeting of the Howard County Commissioners Court, Children’s Librarian Sandra Verdin announced that the Howard County Library had been awarded a Family Place Library Grant in the amount of $6,000 from the Texas State Library & Archives Commission, also called the TSLAC.

Verdin advised that this will help Howard County Library be more family friendly and give a set of resources for the community, parents, and caregivers.

Verdin told KBest News that the goal is to help Howard County Library become a community center for literacy, promote early childhood development, provide parent education and engagement, support family and community information.

The money from the grant will be utilized for training to learn to implement parent child workshops, develop a special collections for parents and caregivers, set up a specially designated space for families, provide additional programs for babies and toddlers, connect parents and caregivers to community resources, and do outreach within our community to promote these services.

The TSLAC initiated the Family Place Libraries Project in 2015 to help public libraries address early learning with a goal of ensuring that all children enter school ready and able to learn.
