On Friday, July 5th, the Texas Department of Public Safety was involved in a pursuit and two persons are in custody. At approximately 2:30 p.m., a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper was monitoring traffic on Interstate-20 at mile post 128. The Trooper attempted to stop a blue Ford F-150 pickup for a speeding violation. The pickup refused to yield to the Trooper, and began to flee. The pickup fled west exiting Interstate-20 and fleeing onto State Highway 191. The vehicle was finally stopped at mile post 290 on State Highway 191.
The driver was identified at Paul Sandate 37 years of age of Odessa and he was arrested and charged with evading arrest in a vehicle, and hindering apprehension. The passenger of the pickup was identified as Kelby Young 25 years of age of Odessa, and she was arrested charged with an outstanding warrant for a parole violation. Both persons were placed into the Midland County Jail without further incident. Midland County Sherriff’s Deputies assisted in this pursuit.
Also on Friday, an early morning 2-vehicle crash in Midland County resulted in one fatality.
According to Texas DPS, they responded to the crash at approximately 6:25 AM at State Highway 349 and CR 140, just 3 miles south of Midland. The 2 vehicles involved in the crash were a 2014 GMC Sierra pickup, driven by 50-year old Ismael Saldana of Midland, and a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup, driven by 39-year old William Michael Irvin of Monroe, Louisiana.
The preliminary report from Texas DPS revealed that Irvin was traveling southbound on State Highway 349. Saldana attempted to turn left off of State Highway 349 and onto County Road 140. Saldana failed to yield to Irvin’s vehicle and was struck by Irvin. The crash resulted in the death of one of Saldana’s passengers, 26-year old Rene Guadalupe Carrillo Mata of Midland, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead on scene.
Saldana and his other passenger were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital where they were treated and then released.
Irvin and his 3 passengers sustained non-incapacitating injuries.
