Laurie Burk, Quality Analysis at Scenic Mountain Medical Center, was the speaker for Friday’s Kindred Coffee Hour. During her presentation she advised that sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to infection, can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, amputations and death.
Many people attended the presentation and even shared stories of their experiences with sepsis.
Emma Krabill, CEO of Scenic Mountain Medical Center, told KBest News that she was excited to see the turnout at Kindred Coffee Hour.
"Sepsis is a subject that nobody is currently talking about as much as we should. Our community focuses on prevention and treatment of cancer, cancer awareness, and all of those are very important, [like] heart disease - important; but one topic we don't talk much about is sepsis. Sepsis is the third leading cause of death," said Krabill.
She noted that it's important that the community is aware of sepsis, and that Scenic Mountain Medical Center is doing their part to be proactive to help in that and recognize it when they see it.
