Big Spring Mayoral candidate Debbie Wegman has come under scrutiny from community members about her marriage to the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Executive Director Terry Wegman and whether it would constitute nepotism.

She briefly addressed this during last night's candidate forum at Hotel Settles, stating that there are laws in place that allow her to be mayor and allow Terry to maintain his involvement with the EDC. Debbie also stated that she was aware that there are times that she would have to abstain from certain discussions and votes that would involve EDC business. Debbie mentioned that there was a video on her candidate Facebook page that addresses these concerns.

In her video, she mentions that the couple cleared the matter through a Texas Municipal League attorney and an Economic Development attorney prior to filing as a candidate for Mayor. Debbie states that although there may be an indirect route of nepotism, the clause “Continuous Employment” allows her husband to retain employment with the EDC. Since Terry has been employed with the EDC for 10 years, he can retain employment as long as Debbie abstains from discussions and votes that involve certain EDC business.
