Over the last couple of months, the West Texas Rumbleweeds have been drawing the attention of soccer fans in the area. The professional indoor soccer team is associated with the United States Arena Professional Soccer League. Their home games are played at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa.
Leif Kertis, General Manager for the West Texas Rumbleweeds, told KBest News that the league had been in the works for about 5 years. Even though this is the inaugural year for the league, Kertis advised that they’ve had great turnouts for their games. He stated that the first game brought in over 2,000 people and they’ve been able to draw at least 1,500 for each of the following games.
Kertis described the games as being fast-paced, fun, and family friendly. He also advised that their organization is unique in that they allow the fans a lot more access to the players.
"After every game, we allow our fans to come on to the field and meet the players," said Kertis. "We make our players accessible, and just seeing the reaction of the community's had to that, seeing the fact that they love that. They have access to the players. They can get an autograph; they can get a picture. They can actually have that relationship with a player rather than having to idolize a player. They actually get to meet that player."
This Saturday, June 29th, the West Texas Rumbleweeds will take on the undefeated Amarillo Bombers at the Ector County Coliseum at 6 PM. This Saturday is Oil Appreciation Night and Military Appreciation Night. If you’re a part of the oil industry, or if you are present or past military, just show your ID at the box office for a free ticket.
