A-The 8th grade A Steers faced a well coached and disciplined team in the Monahans Loboes on Thursday. We started off slow offensively, but quickly relied on the legs of quarterback Eli Cobos to give us a spark. After a few powerful runs by Eli it seemed as if everyone else stepped in line. The Steers were down early in the first half due to an interception returned for a touchdown. But the offense continued to move the ball effectively behind a tough offensive line manned by, Aaron Chavez, Nick Garcia, Ian Galan, Josh Gonzales, and Rahleigh Eddington.
Going into half time, the game was tied at 6.
The Steer defensive front, headed by Arturo Ortiz, never let up and only allowed one big play to the Loboes throughout the entirety of the game. Constant pressure in the backfield was provided by a relentless David Rios who spearheaded several group tackles for losses. Safety Phillip Martinez did a wonderful job of communicating with the secondary and thwarting any Monahans pass attempts.
Midway through the third, the Steers were down 12-6.
When the Steers got the ball back the Loboes loaded the box in an attempt to slow down running back Chris Salazar who had been earning tough yardage throughout the contest. So the Steers countered with a quick passing game that relied on Sergio Ybarra, Phillip Martinez, and Connor Andrae. Phillip was able to tie the game at 12 by taking a sideline catch all the way in for a score. After forcing another Monahans turnover, the Steers plowed their way into the end zone with Chris Salazar and Eli Cobos, sealing the victory.
Big Hitter of week………… Connor Andrae
B- The 8th Grade B team had a clash with the Monahans Loboes this past Thursday. After a valiant effort by the B team, they fell to Monahans 28-0. The defense played well for 3 quarters causing 4 fumbles and recovering 3 of them, setting up the offense twice in plus territory. The offense which was still adapting to new positions all over the field play extremely hard against a tough monahans defense. The standouts on defense were Zabain Urias and Tyler Deatherage the latter which led the team in tackles, and fumble recoveries. On offense we were led by Josiah Aguero who valiantly fought against bigger opponents and showed absolutely no fear. Another stand-out was Smith Cate who had an average of 38 yards a punt, helping the young Steers with the position battle on special teams. Next week the Steers travel to Pecos to take on the Eagles at 5.
A-Played a hard fought game against Monahans. The Defense made several plays and got a ton of stops. The front 7 got the Loboes out of their element (run game) forcing them to throw it deep. The O-line and wide receivers blocked their tails off all night long. The running backs took advantage of that and gashed the Lobo defense for over 200 yards.
Special teams made several big hits and pinned the offense deep in their own territory several times throughout the game.
B-The 7th grade B team played a tremendous game on 3 sides of the ball. The Steers managed to drive the ball into the red zone on 3-4 trips, but fell short of the goal line.
Offensively, the O-line, Quben Lewis, Kendarick Johnson, and Kyle Gay gave great efforts.
Defensively, the Steers had multiple stops with three 3&outs. The defensive line and line backers played aggressive football.
Individually, Kyle Gay, Bowman, Woodruff all played extremely well.
All teams look forward to facing a tough Pecos team this week.
