Hawk Softball head coach Kelly Raines and assistant coach Shelby Shelton were recently tabbed as the West Region National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) coaching staff of the year.

Raines and Shelton led the Hawks to the NJCAA Division I Softball national tournament in May in St. George, UT and ended being eliminated by the eventual national runner-up Chipola, 3-1, on May 17th.

After being crowned as WJCAC conference champions the Hawks sealed the Region V West Championship for the 4th year in a row leading to their 4th consecutive trip to the national tournament. In the 2018 season the Hawks had four separate win streaks of seven or more games including one of 14 consecutive victories.

Raines has been at the helm of Hawk softball for 13 seasons racking up numerous championships, and several trips to the national tournament.

After beginning her collegiate career with Howard, Shelton went on to play at UT Tyler and, after graduating, returned to Howard College for the last 3 years as Raines’ assistant.

The pair will be recognized at a NFCA ceremony to be held in December.
