Big Spring Jr. High Boys and Girls Basketball Teams Travel to Sweetwater to take on the Mustangs

Girls -
The 7th grade "B" Team Lady Steers took a win over the Sweetwater Mustangs last night in Sweetwater. Jalen Sykes led in points with 6, Makiah Gibson and Mia Bustamante were close behind with 4 each. Genna Bedinger and Kiersten Furuya hustled to get the ball on defense while Kailie Fierro and Emily Matthews helped defend the lane. Maria Villalobos and McKayley Burciaga were fierce on both sides of the ball as well. As you can tell, it was a total team effort. Way to go Lady Steers!

The 7th grade "A" team won against Sweetwater 33-17. Their stamina was incredible. Offensive players of the game were Daniah Wrighter, Elaina Arredondo and Kourtney Moore. Defensive players of the game were Gisselle Holguin, Kaydence Canales and Monica Gutierrez.

The 8th grade B team Lady Steers put up a fight but fell short to Sweetwater. The leading scorer was Kylee Lynch. Good defense was played by GG Gonzales, Kayleigh Muniz and Angelica Calderon. Mallory Paul and GG Gonzales were the lead hustlers in the game.

The 8th grade team dominated Sweetwater 39-2 Monday night. The Lady Steers were led by Alex Enriquez with 13 points, followed by Tristen Smith with 11. Mya Blanco and Kalyn Whitehead were solid on defense. Savanna Zarraga and Brinly Watkins hustled for the Lady Steers.

Big Spring Jr. High girls will host a basketball tournament this weekend with games at Big Spring Jr. High on Thursday, Dec. 14 and Saturday, Dec. 16. The teams coming to the tournament are Sands, Colorado City, Coahoma, Forsan, Klondike and Andrews.

Boys -
According to 8th Grade Social Studies teacher and Basketball Coach Sawyer J. Roberts, the 8th grade “B” team had a good game last night versus Sweetwater.

A great game defensively was turned in by Jesse Hernandez and Matthew Chavarria locking down the paint and making it hard for the Sweetwater attack to muster any offense.

"Offensively we were led by Roman Perez who turned in his 4th plus-10 point effort in five games with 13 points and Darin Sosan added 8 as well," stated Coach Roberts.

Standouts on offense were, Perez, Sosan, and Chavarria, the latter which facilitated the offense from his post position with good court vision and good passes.

Defensively they were led by great post play from Hernandez and Chavarria, and Adrien Juarez locking down whoever he was on and frustrating the Sweetwater attack.

The “B” team has ran their record to 4-1 on the year and will be traveling to Brownwood next week for their last basketball game before Christmas break.

Thanks to Coach Sawyer Roberts and Rosi Slate, BSISD Athletic Secretary at the ATC, for submitting the information!
