Tonight, the Garden City Bearkats will square off against the Borden County Coyotes in Forsan for the 3rd round of the 1A High School 6-Man Football Playoffs.

The Borden County Coyotes fought their way to win the State Championship last year and they’ve been undefeated this season, even sending home all of their competitors by half-time due to the 45-point mercy rule.

Head Football Coach Trey Richie says that his team is really good about paying attention to details during film and on the field. He accredits the team’s success to the momentum that occurs when the defense creates turnovers and to be able to benefit from the mistakes of their competitors.

Even though the Coyotes have had a massive amount of success this season, Coach Richie doesn’t appear to be taking this next game lightly.

“Let’s be honest, you’re only as good as the last game that you played and, so, none of that matters come Friday,” says Coach Richie.

The Garden City Bearkats currently have a season record of 12 wins and only 2 losses. Last season, the Bearkats had their road to the State Championship run short in the 3rd round of the playoffs where they lost 66-48 to Borden County. Garden City’s Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jeff Jones says that he’s excited to still be in the playoffs and they are looking forward to meeting up with Borden County again.

Last week the Bearkats had a close game against Rankin which ended in a final score of 54-40. According to Coach Jones, one of the lessons that Garden City took from that game is that they need to do a better job of tackling.

“We really have to be able to tackle in an open field, and get the running backs down,” says Jones.

Friday’s game will begin at 7:30 PM and you can listen to the game LIVE from Forsan on our KBest radio stations. Listen to 94.3 FM The Fuse to hear the Garden City broadcast, or listen to KBest 95.7 FM to hear the Borden County broadcast.
