The Coahoma varsity volleyball squad honored their two seniors Saturday morning before the last home game of the season.
“This is always a bittersweet moment for me,” said Head Coach Christina Cox. “I am so proud they will be moving on, but they will be missed next year. Maykala and Chloe’ have been integral players on our team for years. I am proud of them and hope the best for them in the years to come.”
Following the brief ceremony, the Bullogettes took the floor to face off against the Clyde Lady Bulldogs. Coahoma lost in three sets, (14,25) (9,25), and (13,25).
The Lady Bulldogs started strong getting the first two points on the board for the first set. An error cost Clyde the ball. Coahoma capitalized on the error by adding a second point from a kill by No. 6 Maykala Overton with No. 2 Julia Mashburn serving. That tied the game at 2,2.
During a long rally No. 3, Julia Cox saved the team with a dig from the floor to keep the ball in play. Coahoma was able to get the ball over the net when a Clyde player hit it out.
Coahoma moved into the lead for the next three rallies with No. 1 Naughtia Rockwell serving before Clyde went on a 12 point run. The Lady Bulldogs put away the game with an ace ending the set at (14,25).
In the second set, Coahoma started strong early on building a lead of (6,1). With No. 6 Maykala Overton serving, the Bulldogettes went on a 5 point score run before Clyde rallied back. The Lady Dogs then dominated the rest of the game which ended at (9,25).
At the beginning of the third set, No. 6 Maykala Overton struck quickly spiking the ball over to get a kill and put the first point on the board. However Clyde slowly built up a strong lead all throughout the game. The Lady Bulldogs dominated serving 23 times compared to Coahoma’s 13, but the Bulldogettes refused to give up quietly. At game point, Coahoma fought hard adding three points before Clyde could end the game at 13,25.
In junior varsity action, JV Red and JV White also lost to Clyde.
Coahoma volleyball teams will head back into action Tuesday for the last game of the season. The girls travel to Colorado City to take on the Wolves. Game time begins at 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. when the varsity Bulldogettes are expected to take the floor.
