Big Spring City Council members will meet for a Special Session tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 14th, at 3 PM in the City Council Chambers located at 307 E. 4th St. in Big Spring.
An emergency reading of an ordinance ordering a special election on May 2, 2020 for the purpose of creating the City of Big Spring Municipal Development District and the Imposition of a Sales and Use Tax of one-half of one percent for the purpose of financing development projects beneficial to the district.
According to a statement by Big Spring Mayor Shannon Thomason regarding the special council meeting, the creation of the municipal development district (or MDD) would affect the City of Big Spring’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, which is an area extending out from the city limits to a distance of 2 miles. Only residents living in this area would be eligible to vote for or against the creation of the MDD.
If created, the MDD would be funded by a half-cent sales tax increase on taxable sales that occur in this area, and would have no effect on property tax rates in the city nor within the extraterritorial jurisdiction, or the EJT.
