Earlier this week during Tuesday night’s intense Big Spring City Council meeting, the council had item #25 from the June 25th, 2019 meeting returned for reconsideration after Big Spring Mayor Shannon Thomason had vetoed the item. The item is concerning the measure granting Silver Leaf Communities a 30-day extension to close on the Parkway/Willard property.

Silver Leaf Communities has been working with the City of Big Spring for over a year to close on this property. The project would develop new housing within the city limits and within the Forsan School District.

Mayor Thomason stated in a letter to Don Moore, City Secretary, that his decision to veto the item is due to his belief that the business of the City of Big Spring is to be conducted in a fully transparent manner.

After much discussion, the council, including the Mayor, voted to “veto the veto” with a unanimous vote.

A new motion was made by Jim Depaw, City Council Member for District 6, to amend changes in the contract between the City of Big Spring and Silver Leaf Communities. After further discussion, and advice from City Attorney Marianne Banks, the council decided that this item should be brought back to the council’s attention at a later date.

Camilla Strande, City Council Member for District 5, made a motion to grant Silver Leaf Communities an extension to close on the property by September 10th of 2019, with the understanding that the item will be returned to the council at a later date. The motion passed 7 to 0.
