After the polls had closed on Saturday evening, it was determined that the elections for Big Spring Mayor and Big Spring City Council District 4 did not have a definite winner. According to Jodi Duck, Elections Administrator for Howard County, a winner for Big Spring Mayor and City Council positions must have a majority vote of 50.1%.
Results from Saturday showed that Debbie Wegman had received 47.98% of the vote, and Shannon Thomason had 35.51% of the vote in the race for Big Spring Mayor.
When asked how he felt about the upcoming runoff election, Thomason stated that with several candidates listed on the ballot for Mayor, he wasn't surprised to see that it ended in a runoff election.
"I'm excited to continue to try to work to try to help fix Big Spring," said Thomason.
When asked the same question, Wegman told KBest News that she appreciated all the voters who turned out for the election.
"We'll just be working the next five weeks to see if we can't get this thing done. I'm ready to go to work for the citizens of Big Spring," said Wegman.
Although there were several entities listed on ballot for this past election, it was noted that out of 15,000 registered voters in Howard County just only 11 percent turned out to vote. Be advised that if you didn’t vote during the May 4th election, you can still vote in the runoff election on June 8th. If you still need to register, you have until May 9th to do so.
Early voting begins May 28, 2019.
