When There's Smoke on the Mountain or Clouds in the Air, K-Best News Is There!
KBST News

Earlier today a crane has crashed through the side of the west end of the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center building, located inside of the Comanche Trail Park in Big Spring.

KBest News has learned that the crane, operated by Cathey Construction, was being used to help with routine maintenance on the pool when this morning's thunderstorm hit. City workers left to take shelter during the storm. The crane was parked at the top of the hill by the operator and the construction workers left the area during the storm. After the storm passed, workers returned to the area to find the crane had rolled down the hill and into the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center.

No one was injured in the crash, but it did cause extensive damage to the pumps, filters, and electrical room that is housed on the west end of the building. The extent of the damage has yet to be determined.

According to David Fort, Parks/ Sports Complex Superintendent for the City of Big Spring, it is possible that the opening of the Aquatic Center may be postponed this summer but he assured that the City of Big Spring would definitely explore options to open the facility as soon as possible.
