A Midland Police Officer was shot and killed on early Tuesday morning, that’s according to our news partners at CBS 7.
Midland Mayor Jerry Morales has identified the officer as 5-year veteran Nathan Hayden Heidelberg.
An internal email obtained by multiple media sources reported that Heidelberg, his probationary officer, plus two additional officers responded to a burglar alarm at a Midland home on Tuesday morning.
The email stated that the officer made a loud announcement of their being at the front door, but the homeowner believed that his house was being broken into.
The homeowner then shot toward the flashlight being held by the office, hitting him above his bullet-proof vest.
Despite MPD personnel trying to treat and transport the officer to the emergency room, he died from his injuries.
Mayor Morales stated that the shooting occurred around 2:30 AM and Officer Heidelberg passed away at 8:30 AM.
The Texas Rangers will be investigating the shooting.
Officer Heidelberg's body was transported to Tarrant County for an autopsy. At approximately 11:30 AM today, the transport along I-20 arrived in Big Spring and was met with many local law enforcement and community members standing by to show their condolescenes for the fallen officer, his family, and Midland PD.
