On the 5th of June 2018 at approximately 8:38 P.M., a Big Spring Police Department officer was traveling eastbound in the 200 block of W. FM 700 approaching the intersection of F.M. 700 and Goliad. The officer observed a Red and Black 2017 Honda CBR 600R motorcycle exiting off of the south service road onto W. FM 700 directly in front of the patrol vehicle. The officer noted the driver of the motorcycle was driving recklessly and failed to signal his intention to make a left turn onto S. Goliad. The officer then attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the driver of the motorcycle in the 2300 block of S. Goliad and the driver sped away on the motorcycle refusing to stop for the officer who had activated his lights and siren. The motorcycle was also being ridden by a female passenger.

The driver of the motorcycle evaded officers north on Goliad to E. 3rd St and then west on E. 3rd until wrecking the motorcycle in the 2000 block of W. 3rd St. Upon officer's arrival at the wreck, the driver of the motorcycle identified as Austin Ryan Cantu, White/Male 22 years of age, was found deceased as a result of the crash. The female passenger of the motorcycle, identified as Ellen Alexandra Vasquez, White/Female 27 years of age, was found to be in serious condition and transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center for treatment. The female was later flown by helicopter to University Medical Center Lubbock and as of this morning Mrs. Vasquez was in serious condition. The extent of her injuries are still unknown at this time.

The Big Spring Police Department was assisted by the Department of Public Safety. This incident is currently under Investigation by the Big Spring Police Department and we have no further information at this time.

The Big Spring Police Department sends condolences to the family of Mr. Austin Cantu and asks the community for prayers for the family of Mr. Cantu and for Mrs. Vasquez and her family.

Chief of Police, Chad Williams
Administrative Lieutenant Brian Gordon
