From BSPD 3-7-18:

On the 29th of January 2015 at approximately 8:10 P.M., Big Spring Police Department Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of Stadium in regards to “shots fired”. Upon their arrival, Matthew Burnett White/Male 23 years of age was found sitting in the passenger side of a 1999 Buick Park Avenue with a single gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency Medical Services Personnel responded to the scene and found Mr. Burnett had no signs of life and was deceased. The Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and began investigating the shooting. The only witness at the scene was identified as St. John Garcia Jr Hispanic/Male 24 years of age. Garcia informed Officers and Detectives that only he and Burnett were outside of the residence in the driveway when Burnett “accidently” shot himself in the chest.

Big Spring Police Department Detectives have worked this investigation for the past 3 years and had solicited the assistance from the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Division.

On February 20th 2018, the Criminal Investigations Division presented a probable cause affidavit to a magistrate and a warrant for the arrest of Garcia was issued for the offense of Murder a First degree Felony.

On the 7th of March 2018 at approximately 9:36 A.M., St. John Garcia Jr. was arrested for Murder and booked into the Howard County Law Enforcement Center. St. John Garcia Jr is currently awaiting arraignment.

This continues to be an active investigation by the Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and no further information can be provided at this time. The Big Spring Police Department thanks the citizens of Big Spring and the family of Mr. Burnett for their assistance and patience with this investigation.

Chief of Police, Chad Williams
Administrative Lieutenant Brian Gordon
