The Texas Department of State Health Services has redesignated Scenic Mountain Medical Center as a Level 4 Trauma Facility.
The designation is valid for a 3 year period. In the U.S. trauma centers are classified in five categories Level 1 through 5..
Level 5 centers provide initial evaluation, stablization, diagnostic services and transfer to higher level facilities.
Level 4 centers which SMMC is, provide initial evaluation, stabilization and diagnosis of seriously injured patients.
Level 3 centers have the resources to provide emergency resuscitation, surgery and intenstive care for the majority of trauma patients.
Level 2 centers like Covenant in Lubbock work closely with Level 1 centers like University Medical Center in Lubbock.
UMC-Lubbock provides the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients.
A Level 1 facility has a full arsenal of highly trained specialists and equipment available at all times.
